NICOLE ATKINS & THE BLACK SEA
New York, NY
Appearing @ Keegan Ales Friday October 7 – 10:30pm
http://mondoamore.nicoleatkins.com
Nicole Atkins is, by all accounts, a singer’s singer. Her voice has that rare combination of smoky vibrato and enviable range. She has often been compared to the likes of Roy Orbison and Loretta Lynn and her songwriting, as you’ll find out from one listen to her most recent release Mondo Amore, is second to none. Raised in New Jersey and later re-locating to North Carolina, Nicole eventually made her way to New York City, where a residence at Pianos in the Lower East Side eventually led to a major label record deal with Columbia. To date she has four releases: Bleeding Diamonds (2006), Neptune City (2007), Nicole Atkins Digs Other People’s Songs (2008) and her latest, Mondo Amore (2011). Nicole has appeared on national television in both the United States (Late Night With David Letterman) and England (Later With Jools Holland) and graced the stage at major festivals such as: Bonnaroo, Ottawa Blues Fest, Outside Lands, Lollapalooza, All Points West, O2 Festival (UK), Roskilde (Denmark), Peace and Love Festival, Austin City Limits, SXSW, and most recently… Mountain Jam. Her single “Cry Cry Cry” has been in rotation on WDST since her performance at Mountain Jam and is certain to be just one of many highlights when she appears at Keegan Ales on Friday October 7.

SPIRIT FAMILY REUNION
Brooklyn, NY
Appearing @ The Old Dutch Church Saturday October 8 – 7:00pm
https://www.facebook.com/spiritfamilyreunion
Spirit Family Reunion are an up and coming group steeped in the tradition of Woody Guthrie, dusty boots, and worn acoustic instruments… The band works because it doesn’t discriminate from any sort of ‘traditional’ music, iconic folk’s lyricism rubs up against zydeco rhythms and the Gospel hallelujah rides a top a claw-hammer banjo line. “Their modern-day update on Woody Guthrie has a dusty, wide-open sound, and the wooden instrument, claw hammer banjo-powered music is raw, honest and important.”-Daily Freeman “Sounding like rail-riding hobos-turned union organizers, Spirit Family Reunion delivers ramshackle, sing-along melodies and hope for a better future. Guitar, banjo, fiddle and bass help songs chug forward with a new sincerity” - The Independent Weekly
SPIRIT FAMILY REUNION – “When My Name Is Spoken”
IDA
Hudson Valley

They have collaborated with artists including Levon Helm, Michael Hurley, Low, His Name Is Alive, and P-Funk’s Bernie Worrell. THE COMPOSITIONS OF PAULINE OLIVEROS
Kingston, NY
Appearing @ BSP Saturday October 8 – 2:00pm
There simply is not enough space in our little website to give this local artist her due, but in a nut-shell: Pauline Oliveros is an American accordionist, composer and central figure in the development of post-war electronic art music. She was a founding member of the San Francisco Tape Music Center in the 1960s, and served as its director. She has taught music at Mills College, the University of California, San Diego (UCSD), and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Oliveros has written books, formulated new music theories and investigated new ways to focus attention on music including her concepts of “Deep Listening” and “sonic awareness”. A composer, teacher and author Oliveros continues to innovate, inspire and perform internationally. For this year’s O+ Festival, Pauline has selected three of her compositions to be performed: “King Kong Sing-Along”, “Rock Piece” & “Six For New Time” (the latter was originally composed for Sonic Youth). Volunteers are still needed for the performance of “King Kong Sing Along” & “Rock Piece”. Please write to music@opositivefestival.org if you’re interested (musical training is not required).

He is now working on a third album with producer Dan Carey (Lily Allen, M.I.A., Hot Chip). With a deep and plainspoken voice that’s been described as powerful, soothing and narcotic, and songs that celebrate the tragedy of humanity and poke fun at its foibles, a Willy Mason concert is a place to breathe easy and call a truce with the world. Come see him testing out new material for his new album, due for release early ’12.

Albany, NY
Appearing solo @ Elephant Friday October 7 – 8:30pm
Appearing as full band @ BSP Sunday October 9 – 9:00pm
Originally slated to perform at the inaugural O+ Festival in 2010, we are pleased to welcome this Albany collective, who according to their official website, “have been kicking around for a while now”. Their style has been described as follows: “2 parts continental gypsy, 1 part Balkan folk, a pinch of Swordfishtrombones, with a healthy dash of On Avery Island….I’ve been spinning “Everything Is, Pt. III”, on the radio show, with repeated inquiries as to its origin.” – Aquarium Drunkard “[The Hobo Banned] brought to mind a Salvation Army band playing in a junkyard while tripping on acid.” – Jim DeRogatis, Chicago Sun Times “Composed of multi-instrumentalists, the ramshackle loping of the [eight]-piece solidifies into a pounding assault of chaos like a runaway horse carriage. While light and uplifting at times, the sound tends to offer an eerie darkness.” – La Blogotheque But don’t take our word for it, come see for yourself.

Appearing @ BSP Friday October 7 – 10:00pm
http://www.reverbnation.com/page_object/page_object_bio/artist_821105
Sings Falana on the title track with her unbending honesty- “In the light it’s gonna be scary. In the light you’re going to see everything.” Mixed by Gareth Jones (Grizzly Bear, Mogwai, Interpol) and produced by Kevin McMahon (Swans, Titus Andronicus, French Kicks) In the Light was born with glimmers of dreamy pop among deep layers of sonic and harmonic textures. Legendary players such as cellist Jane Scarpantoni (Lou Reed, Kristen Hirsch, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs) play on the record… She accomplishes her mission with thetribal rant of drummer Nick Monte and a series of original film projections. The combination of Ms. Falana’s sound and visual storyboard fuse together to form something larger then the elements that make it up. “It’s 2011 and people want to be stimulated. I think people are starving,” said Falana.

TJ KONG & THE ATOMIC BOMB
Philadelphia, PA
Appearing @ The Stockade Tavern Saturday October 8 – 11:00pm
www.facebook.com/tjkongandtheatomicbomb
In their own words… “TJ Kong & the Atomic Bomb are a Philadelphia based band of know-it-alls who found God in the passing lane on Route 81 going South while reading mad libs and trying to cut up the Adderall. The band is known for their effusive and uninhibited live performances characterized by throngs of dancing mayhem and gorgeous sweaty women. This is not a lie. Their sound is defined by Rootsy Americana/Garage Punk derivations of old rock and roll, blues and country sounds driven by caterwauling drums and frontman, Dan Bruskewicz’s elegiac poetry and coal miner’s baritone. They have been called, among other things “a post-apocalyptic fall-out shelter house band” and “entertainingly unhinged.” They are now and always will be a completely unadulterated and exasperatingly freewheeling good time.”

bluecashew presents: O+THEQUE
Featuring DJ Sterling (Hudson Valley), DJ Dandylion & Ryan Smith (NYC)
Appearing/Spinning Saturday October 8 @ BSP – 11:30pm ’til LATE!
THEQUE, an acclaimed, once a season themed late night DJ dance party, brings an international dance sound to the hip, eclectic, mixed audience of sound aficionados in the Hudson Valley. Theque celebrates the Fall with the fourth programmed installment, O+Theque. Sean B Nutley, producer of the Theque event, carefully selected a celebrated threesome of local and NYC Disc Jockey artists; Ryan Smith (UK/New York City), DJ Dandylion (Seattle/New York City) and Jonathan Herrera aka DJ Sterling (Hudson Valley). The DJ’s spinning dance tracks will represent a distinctive mix of classic and forward-thinking house and disco tracks for the festival-goers. Sean B Nutley states “the choices of Disc Jockeys for the festival was guided by a more edgy but modern, contemporary dance sound to complement the annual arts festival.”
Ryan Smith – A teen on the Minneapolis rave scene of the late-90’s, by 16 Ryan Smith wasduly obsessed with house and techno music. But it wasn’t until moving to New Yorkin 2006 that he took his love of the music in the direction of DJing andpromoting. Combining forces with DJ Ron Like Hell, Ryan started DJing at“Rocket,” a party night they collaborated on at Hose in the East Villagethat became popular for its distinctive mix of classic and forward-thinkinghouse and disco. Later he co-conceived and DJed the Soffitta70 parties atthe Public Assembly Loft in Williamsburg, combining house and techno musicwith psychedelic art, and drawing a vibrant and eclectic young dancecrowd. The sound Ryan and Ron created for these parties caught the attentionof Honey Soundsystem, Catz ‘n Dogz, and Electronic Music Bears, leading tothe duo’s tailoring exclusive podcasts for all of them. Ryan’s penchant for soulful rhythms with a decidedly forward edge soonbrought him DJ gigs in San Francisco (with Honeysoundsystem), inLondon (Dalston Superstore, Camp Basement, and Vogue Fabrics), and in Berlinas well as one of New York’s most popular dance clubs, Santos Party House. Most recently Ryan was invited to play Bunker, the cutting-edge techno nightin Brooklyn that features a residency series of DJs from Berlin’s legendarydance club, Berghain. As a DJ, Ryan continues pushing the dance music envelope with sweat-inducingrhythms at his latest venture, “Wrecked,” at National Underground in NewYork. He’s also expanding his creative parameters as one of the foundingpartners of Discaire, the new queer-run record label based out of NYC, SanFrancisco and London that is garnering wide-eyed and -eared attention forits first release, “Mercurio” from Berlin duo Discodromo. And of course hekeeps pushing the hip-moving musical parameters of New York’s dance clubs!

Daniel Miller aka DJ Dandylion, migrated from the West Coast in ’08 from Portland, OR (Vas-o-line, Spread, Booty) to NYC (Coinslot) and finds Brooklyn home. He has deejayed for almost ten years playing gigs in Hawai’i (Ecstatic Dance, Full Moon parties) Los Angeles (Dirty Sailor), San Francisco (the first party–Spintuition, recently Dial-Up, Booty Call), & the original inspiration, Tennessee (radical underground gatherings). His style can be ‘spintuitive,’ leaning on groove based beats, to lately Tech/Deep House breakthrough dance music. Coupling perfectionism with not taking itself too seriously, and a proclivity to improvisation, somewhere is born The Dandy Deejay. Dj Dandylion spins second Sundays @ Easternbloc, aptly named “Marinate,” the premise being a freeform music platform he calls “Boutique Jukebox” with guest antics, performances, and dj’s.

MARCIANA JONES
Martha’s Vineyard, MA
Appearing @ Elephant Friday October 7 – 7:30pm
What do you feel when you hear a song? Does it matter? Or does it only matter that you feel something? Sometimes I immediately disregard a record the first time I play it. It’s the second or third time that gets me to fall in love forever. Sometimes I fall in love with a record too quick and too hard. The romance is quickly lost. I don’t actually have a record for you to fall in love with or detest. I can tell you I’ve fallen in love with quite a few more records, roads, people, pieces of art, and experiences than I’ve ever hated. Whether or not that means anything to you, it means a lot to me. If you hear me play a song, I hope you fall in love with it. If you hate it at least you felt something. If you feel nothing at all my best advice to you is to fall in love, hate, bliss, anger, enthuse, or melancholy more often. I think that after a while it will make you realize that every song in the world makes you feel some way or another. It’s good to feel things.
MARCIANA JONES – “Mother”

GEEZER
Kingston, NY
Appearing @ Snapper Magee’s Sunday October 9 – 6:00pm
http://www.reverbnation.com/geezerny
In the fall of 2010, recent Brooklyn transplants to Kingston, Pat Harrington and Chris Turco, started to get together for some loose jams. Upon meeting each other earlier that summer, they realized quickly that they had the same musical influences and approach, it was only a matter of time before Turco’s drums made it into Pat’s basement… Harnessing their familiar background of classic rock, hardcore and heavy metal; throw in Pat’s new found affinity for pre-war slide-guitar blues and Geezer was born. Once the songs started to take shape, Freddy Villano was brought in to bring the monster low-end bass that he is known for. Best described as ‘Heavy Blues’, Pat says of Geezer’s approach, “We just wanted to bring the evil back to the blues, the devil’s music! Somehow the blues got co-opted by hippies and jam bands and made it all nice and fluffy, we’re here to change that!”

YOUNG MAGIC
Brooklyn, NY
Appearing @ BSP Friday October 7 – 7:00pm
http://www.myspace.com/youngmagicsounds
Drawing a symbiotic balance from the soundtracks of West Africa, Turkey and beyond, Brainfeeder hip-hop, UK Bass and 60s psychedelic soul, Young Magic is an ethereal exploration into past and future. Although the band is now Brooklyn-based, it’s roots are far wider… and deeper. Made up of Australians Isaac Emmanuel and Michael Italia and Indonesian born Melati Malay, Young Magic is a mix of: new boogie, beats, psych and soul , textures of deep space exploration and wide expanse through music’s ancient history and rich future. The band joined the Carpark Records family in late 2010, and a new collective was born. Night In The Ocean b/w Slip Time is the next sonic move by Young Magic. The bands second 7” to drop into the world is another intimate, lushed-out affair continuing on the tingly widescreen journey that You With Air b/w Sparkly began earlier this year. Equal parts head-noddingly heavy and beautifully delicate, this series of music comes from a debut album that is becoming accidentally grand in scope and vision, recorded in over 10 counties around the world, and out early 2012.

THE BLACK HOLLIES
Jersey City, NJ
Appearing @ Keegan Ales Saturday October 8 – 10:00pm
http://clawandgloberecords.tumblr.com/
http://www.ernestjenning.com/band_theblackhollies.htm
The Black Hollies began in 2005, have three full length LP’s, a slew of 45′s, and years of touring under their belts. The themes have always been exploration of form, channeling the spontaneity of the moment, making arrangements, caring, not caring, charcuterie, imported Belgian ales, Indicas v.s. Sativas, French wines, nasty fuzz tones, tight grooves, leslie rotors, tape wound bottom end, deep slow panning, organ grinders, tape echoes, and feeling the flow. As a collective all the players involved share a varied yet connected musical past. The Black Hollies hastily turn a deaf ear toward connotations used to pigeon hole the band. Maybe The Black Hollies did it to themselves by recording their latest LP, Softly Towards The Light, at Pigeon Club in Hoboken, NJ, amidst surly, yet seemingly narcoleptic, old Italian men with a penchant for jugs of Carlo Rossi and Enteman’s donuts. Maybe after seeing these mean old men passed out in their wood-paneled club house drooling on worn out lazy boy chairs in front of a ratty early 1980′s wood-paneled television with tin foil bunny rabbit ears for antennas at two o’clock in the afternoon, the band realized it wanted nothing to do with being a throw back. Call the Black Hollies a throw back and the members usual responses are either, “How about I throw you back, literally?” Or, “Oh, did you throw your back out? You should try acupuncture and Chinese herbs.” Recently, The Black Hollies performed a supporting role for UK’s The Heavy at Bowery Ballroom. Does anything compare to the rabid screams of encouragement uttered from 600 plus fans of The Heavy who had no idea who the Black Hollies were or what had just happened but knew only two things that they loved it and they wanted more? I don’t know, you’ll have to ask one of The Black Hollies. Ed Koch was heard afterwards saying, “I felt like I was seeing Zep at MSG in 1972. I thought Justin was going to start playing bass with a bow.”

Not to mention, Serbian, Croatian and Bulgarian tunes. All of these musics have a lot in common once you get past the labels. We come to this band from different directions but take great joy in playing and sharing this music.

RUIN/RENEWAL
Boston, MA
Appearing @ Snapper Magee’s Sunday October 9 – 5:00pm
When guitarist Josh Pritchard and drummer Brett Bashaw began playing music together in 2008, both had recently experienced the demise of a creative project that had, until that point, been the single preoccupation of their artistic and creative lives. Each was waiting out that malady of misdirection and indecision that accompanies all endings. It was on the property of a fuel company warehouse in the industrial zone of Newburyport, Massachusetts that the two first traded musical concepts – Bashaw using two drums, one cymbal and some brushes and Pritchard using an acoustic guitar and low-grade microphone, each broadcast through the same amplifier. Although these early sounds bore little resemblance to what would become the driving explosiveness of the Boston-based rock band Ruin/Renewal, some elements have remained constant; namely, Bashaw’s preternatural sense of rhythmic timing and Pritchard’s large and growing collection of resonant alternate guitar tunings. One year later, having recruited Lowell-native Josh Homer for bass guitar duty, the band reestablished their headquarters in Boston, on the banks of the Mystic River. The band’s debut EP, the first of a three part series, was released on June 7th. Ruin/Renewal will support the EP with numerous appearances in Boston and along the East Coast corridor throughout the summer and fall 2011, joined by Josh’s brother, guitarist John Pritchard. The band is continuing to work on material for EP number two, scheduled for release next winter.

Be it with scorching punk guitar or a heavy reggae beat, El Front keeps the pressure on with a musical rallying call for unity and mobilization against the forces of oppression, corruption and injustice worldwide. The band’s name ‘El Front’ is Catalán meaning ‘the front’ which reflects a recurring theme in their music, that of the Spanish Revolution of the 1930′s and the Spanish anarchists’ role in that historic struggle against fascism, one of many references to historical events in the band’s material. El Front is comprised of Loren Order on drums, Warren Terror on bass, guitar and backing vocal, Lima Charlie on guitar, electric tres, bass and vocals, and Matty Dread on guitar and vocals. The band is currently producing their first release containing 21 original songs which is due out in sometime in Fall of 2011.

Flower child Kelly McNally and her Organic Rock band The Virginia Wolves are fresh-faced out of bohemia, saluting America’s soldiers on this poetic 13-track debut album, “Curse of the Kill” which McNally hopes to bring to the ears of our dedicated troops and veterans. She dubs these “propeace songs”—not antiwar songs—and brings a message of hope and truth through her authentic ’60s attitude and rootsy musical passion. McNally’s controlled, steady guitar and lustrous voice is supported by Adele Schulz (vocal harmonies, french horn, trumpet, tambourine) Chris Macchia (bass), Alan Macaluso (pedal steel, electric guitar) Eric Ortner (violin) & Jed Kosiner (drums & percussion) and various other local talents who nail a creeping folk groove on the head while maintaining a highly emotive and lyrical sound. – Sharon Nichols (Chronogram)

JEREMY MAGE & THE MAGI
Hudson Valley / New York, NY
Appearing @ BSP Saturday October 8 – 10:30pm
http://jeremymage.com/
This is naked music, which the New York Times called “rough but nuanced.” Raw emotion jostles with philosophical outlooks on a move-your-body beat. Jeremy Mage wields diverse tools. He led the Easy Star All Stars “Dub Side of the Moon” world tour, and produces music for Tummy Touch (London dance) and Double Moon (Istanbul experimental). He apprenticed with a range of masters, from Alan Ginsberg, John Esposito, Steve Gorn, and Jack Hardy in New York to Fred Frith in Oakland, Pupi Pedroso in Havana and Shrinivasan in Varanasi. He’s toured as a multi-instrumentalist and singer with soul jazz artist Lizz Wright, Afro punk diva Tamar Kali, and Nigerian dance superhero Wunmi. These tributaries join in the tumbling stream that descends from the Minnewaska mountains of Mage’s youth (He grew up in a hexagonal wood cabin at Tilson’s “Center for Symbolic Studies”); slips through the ripe gutters of New York City; freezes and thaws in broken patterns, and finally evaporates. His band “The Magi” draw on a deep well of musical wisdom and groove experience. Deceptively simple, dangerously close.

In March of 2011, the band hit the road in support of Strange Creatures, appearing at SXSW in Austin, Texas and the Valley of the Vapors festival in Hot Springs, Arkansas along the way. With a steadily increasing fan base, particularly in the Northeast region of the U.S., the band has appeared at over 50 different venues in the short time since their formation. Some of their influences include The Bouncing Souls, The Muffs, The Misfits, Descendents, Against Me!, No Doubt, The Cramps, Weezer, and The Dead Kennedys, however, the band is also inspired by artists such as Sam Cooke, Patsy Cline, and Little Richard. Currently, American Pinup is gearing up for an August tour with New Jersey up-and-comers Lost In Society, with whom they will also be releasing a split in the fall of 2011. They are also working on material for a follow-up release, which has yet to be officially announced.
