O+ is honored to present exhibitions by two artists and community leaders in the region that speak to the humanity of the immigrant experience in America. The artists, Marielena Ferrer and Lala Montoya, offer an intimate, informed lens on the fundamental nature of migration as well as the state sanctioned terror inflicted on families in our names.
Marielena Ferrer is an artist based in Kingston who’s creative and advocacy work have been celebrated throughout the Hudson Valley. She is now the Executive Director of Unison Arts and remains deeply connected to SUNY New Paltz where she received her MFA. Ferrer’s evolving project, Broken Monarchs, will be presented in O+’s storefront project space, located at the corner of Wall and N. Front Sts in Uptown Kingston. This installation of wire, ink, tissue paper and monofilament will fill the terrarium-like space with the color, movement and fragility of migrating butterflies. Both the butterflies and the contained cell of the storewindow speak directly to the thousands of children, including infants, that were victims of Trump’s zero tolerance policy at our southern border.

Las artistas, Marielena Ferrer y Lala Montoya, ofrecen una visión íntima y documentada de la naturaleza fundamental de la migración, así como del terror infligido por el Estado a las familias en nuestro nombre.
Marielena Ferrer es una artista afincada en Kingston cuya labor creativa y de defensa ha sido reconocida en todo el valle del Hudson. Actualmente es directora ejecutiva de Unison Arts y sigue profundamente vinculada a la Universidad Estatal de Nueva York en New Paltz, donde obtuvo su máster en Bellas Artes. El proyecto en evolución de Ferrer, Monarcas Rotas, se presentará en el espacio de proyectos de O+, situado en la esquina de Wall Street y N. Front Street, en el distrito histórico de Kingston. Esta instalación de alambre, tinta, papel de seda y monofilamento llenará el espacio, similar a un terrario, con el color, el movimiento y la fragilidad de las mariposas migratorias. Tanto las mariposas como la vitrina que las contiene hablan directamente de los miles de niños, incluidos bebés, que fueron víctimas de la política de tolerancia cero de Trump en nuestra frontera sur.
ARTIST STATEMENT
Monarch butterflies, with their patterned wings and fluttering flight, are synonymous with freedom of movement. The monarchs in this installation had their freedoms crushed. The 5,000-plus paper butterflies were caged like the 5,000-plus children and infants caged by the Trump-Pence administration’s “zero-tolerance” policy at the U.S.-Mexican border. Most of the children are now back with their families. But they continue suffering psychological trauma, with lifelong consequences. That’s why these monarchs have torn wings: The children were freed, but their childhoods remain lacerated. Even as the monarchs fly free, they cannot break the ties to each other — ties shared by the tragedy of the cage. Still, their vibrant colors evoke resilience and hope that these children will fully recover.
Las mariposas monarca, con sus alas estampadas y su particular revoloteo, son sinónimo de libertad de movimiento. Las monarcas en esta instalación vieron sus libertades destrozadas. Las más de 5000 mariposas de papel fueron enjauladas como los más de 5000 niños y bebés enjaulados por la política de “tolerancia cero” de la administración Trump-Pence en la frontera entre Estados Unidos y México. La mayoría de los niños han regresado con sus familias. Pero continúan sufriendo traumas psicológicos, con consecuencias para toda la vida. Por eso estas monarcas tienen las alas rasgadas: fueron liberadas, pero su infancia sigue lacerada. Incluso mientras las monarcas vuelan libres, no pueden romper los lazos que las unen, lazos compartidos por la tragedia de la jaula. Aun así, sus vibrantes colores evocan resiliencia y esperanza por su completa recuperación.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Marielena Ferrer’s artistic practice centers on the role of art in social change, particularly through political, public, and community art. Growing up in an artistic household in Venezuela, Ferrer learned traditional craft-making and developed a lifelong commitment to cultural storytelling, which informs her artistic and leadership practice. As a visual artist, she has presented exhibitions, workshops, and community-engaged projects that center heritage, migration narratives, and social practice.
An award-winning artist and regional leader, Ferrer serves on multiple arts and community boards across Ulster County and has been recognized with the Ulster County Executive’s Arts Award, the International Sculpture Center Outstanding Student Achievement Award, and several honors from SUNY New Paltz, where she earned her MFA in Sculpture. Through her leadership, she combines creative vision with systems-level strategy, cultivating resilient, community-rooted organizations that empower artists and audiences alike to shape equitable and inclusive cultural spaces.
La práctica artística de Marielena Ferrer se centra en el papel del arte en el cambio social, particularmente a través del arte político, público y comunitario. Criada en un hogar con un fuerte componente artístico en Venezuela, Ferrer aprendió artesanía tradicional y desarrolló un compromiso permanente con la narrativa cultural, que inspira su práctica artística y de liderazgo. Como artista visual, ha presentado exposiciones, talleres y proyectos comunitarios centrados en el patrimonio, las narrativas migratorias y la práctica social.
Artista galardonada y líder regional, Ferrer forma parte de múltiples juntas artísticas ycomunitarias en el condado de Ulster y ha sido reconocida con el Premio de Artes del Ejecutivo del Condado de Ulster, el Premio al Logro Estudiantil Destacado del Centro Internacional de Escultura y varias distinciones de SUNY New Paltz, donde obtuvo su Maestría en Bellas Artes en Escultura. A través de su liderazgo, combina la visión creativa con la estrategia sistémica, cultivando organizaciones resilientes y con raíces comunitarias que empoderan tanto a artistas como al público para crear espacios culturales equitativos e inclusivos.
Art O+n Wall is a distinct project space located at the corner of Wall and N. Front Streets in storefront of The O+ Exchange in the historic Uptown Kingston neighborhood. Encased by glass windows on three sides, this space offers a site-specific, highly visible, distinct container for the exhibition and/or development of new work with an emphasis on sculpture, installation, time-based media and performance by Hudson Valley artists.
