O+ is honored to present exhibitions by two artists and community leaders in the region that speak to the humanity of the immigrant experience in America. The artists, Marielena Ferrer and Lala Montoya, offer an intimate, informed lens on the fundamental nature of migration as well as the state sanctioned terror inflicted on families in our names.
Lala Montoya, based in Poughkeepsie, is an artist who has been leading in food, language and social justice work for years with an emphasis on supporting youth. Her woodcut prints and ceramics, on view in the O+ Exchange Gallery, speak to the interdependence between people and the natural world This connection of people, animals, plants and soil is not just depicted in her work pictorially, with an emphasis on uplifting images of migrant and indigenous peoples. The formal elements in the work—from her active, swirly cuts into the wooden surface of her printing plates to the collapsing of hierarchy apparent in her play with scale—reaffirm that all living things are intrinsically linked through joy, through empathy, through breath and through love.
O+ tiene el honor de presentar las exposiciones de dos artistas y líderes comunitarios de la región que hablan de la humanidad de la experiencia de los inmigrantes en Estados Unidos. Las artistas, Marielena Ferrer y Lala Montoya, ofrecen una visión íntima y documentada de la naturaleza fundamental de la migración, así como del terror infligido por el Estado a las familias en nuestro nombre.
Lala Montoya, con sede en Poughkeepsie, es una artista que lleva años liderando iniciativas relacionadas con la alimentación, el lenguaje y la justicia social, con especial énfasis en el apoyo a los jóvenes. Sus grabados en madera y cerámicas, que se exhiben en la galería O+ Exchange, hablan de la interdependencia entre las personas y el mundo natural. Esta conexión entre las personas, los animales, las plantas y la tierra no solo se representa pictóricamente en su obra, con énfasis en imágenes inspiradoras de pueblos migrantes e indígenas. Los elementos formales de la obra, desde sus activos y sinuosos cortes en la superficie de madera de sus planchas de impresión hasta el derrumbe de la jerarquía que se aprecia en su juego con la escala, reafirman que todos los seres vivos están intrínsecamente vinculados a través de la alegría, la empatía, la respiración y el amor.

beloved, how it has taken us some time to see ya’ll
apologies as it was easy to look away at what made us uncomfortable- that voice saying is far away.. or what can we do ? What can one .. person do?today we can’t look away as the snow falls and lays heavy in the ground – achy hands remember that they must go outside to shovel , our worried Feet remember there’s ice, black ice and that we all must look around. Today we are reminded of the dangers of nature but wait.. we are nature. Snow falling from the roof, Wakes us up with a terrifying sound but suddenly a bird sings. The last icicles break in a dramatic crash, evidence that ice melts and spring comes.
Human and more than human surrender to the messiness and muck, the fertility that comes from decomposition, and we grow something unimaginable! one can’t help it by being an optimist, a visionary dreamer, when one sees a little SEED growING. {what a transformation} When we Remember that from the cold soil, a flower will emerge, a mushroom bloom, Cempaxochitl you might know her as Marigold: her shades of yellow and orange. It’s almost impossible to remember winter. She is immortal, an olive flower, tiny and tender so delicate yet she turns into this hard fruit :Zaytoon (زيتون) What a miracle when she, fruit is squeeze by the hands of remarkable people and fruit turns to oil, to medicine- flowers, fruits, mushrooms, more than human relatives, human relatives, kin, beloveds.
Every carving in the wood is to make HOPE VISIBLE , Reminders that Spring and Summer are coming. To make it so impossible to look away, make it so impossible not to touch- we can feel it. We can feel the hope, the joy, the curiosity so deep in our bodies, we do anything for each other, for each of us- each SEED to experience growING. beloved, how it has taken us some time to see ya’ll
Querides, cuánto tiempo nos ha llevado verles a todes ..
vuestras disculpas, ya que era fácil apartar la mirada de lo que nos incomodaba: esa voz que dice que está lejos… ¿o qué podemos hacer? ¿Qué puede hacer una sola persona? Hoy no podemos mirar hacia otro lado, mientras la nieve cae y se acumula pesadamente en el suelo; nuestras manos doloridas recuerdan que deben salir a palear, nuestros pies preocupados recuerdan que hay hielo, hielo negro, y que todos debemos mirar a nuestro alrededor. Hoy se nos recuerda los peligros de la naturaleza, pero esperen… nosotres somes la naturaleza. La nieve que cae del techo nos despierta con un sonido aterrador, pero de repente un pájaro canta. Los últimos cristales de hielo se rompen con un estruendo dramático, prueba de que el hielo se derrite y llega la primavera.
Los humanes y más que los humanes se rinden al desorden y al barro, a la fertilidad que proviene de la descomposición, ¡y cultivamos algo inimaginable! Uno no puede evitar ser optimista, un soñador visionarie, cuando ve crecer una pequeña SEMILLA. {Qué transformación!} Cuando recordas que de la fría tierra surgirá una flor, florecerá un hongo, Cempaxochitl, que quizá conozcas como caléndula: sus tonos amarillos y naranjas. Es casi imposible recordar el invierno. Ella es inmortal. una flor de olivo, pequeña y tierna, tan delicada, pero se convierte en este fruto duro: Zaytoon (زيتون). Qué milagro cuando ella, el fruto, es exprimido por las manos de personas extraordinarias y el fruto se convierte en aceite, en medicina: flores, frutos, setas, más que parientes humanos, parientes humanos, familiares, seres queridos.
Cada tallado en la madera es para hacer VISIBLE LA ESPERANZA, recordatorios de que la primavera y el verano están llegando. Para que sea imposible apartar la mirada, para que sea imposible no tocarlo, podes sentirlo. Podes sentir la esperanza, la alegría, la curiosidad tan profunda en nuestros cuerpis, que hacemos cualquier cosa por los demás, por cada uno de nosotres, cada SEMILLA para que cada semilla CREZCA.Querides, cuánto tiempo nos ha llevado verles a todes ..
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Currently rooted in the Hudson Valley, NY, Lala was born and raised in Medellín, Colombia – a land of strong mountains, ancient lakes and careful campesinos.
Montoya draws inspiration from the abundant nature surrounding her, recognizing the inherent richness within each individual, manifesting itself through the body and the journey of life. This inspiration finds expression in her compelling earthy art, spanning ceramics, wood carving, painting, and printing blocks.
Through these mediums, Montoya seeks to illuminate the beauty of time, of age – to make transparent the small details often missed in the rush of progress and perfection. It is by working with youth in her partnerships that this work stays vibrant and alive.
“Art give us love because we need love , art bring us commitment because we long for it – art bring us joy because we want to continue finding joy – art get us closer to that community/ family we desire – we wanna art to live in us and come thru us so we can carve the future we dream of”
Actualmente afincada en el valle del Hudson, en Poughkeepsie, Nueva York, Lala nació y se crió en Medellín, Colombia, una tierra de imponentes montañas, lagos milenarios y campesinos cuidadosos.
Montoya se inspira en la abundante naturaleza que la rodea, reconociendo la riqueza inherente a cada individuo, que se manifiesta a través del cuerpo y el viaje de la vida. Esta inspiración encuentra su expresión en su cautivador arte terrenal, que abarca la cerámica, la talla en madera, la pintura y los bloques de impresión.
A través de estos medios, Montoya busca iluminar la belleza del tiempo, de la edad, para hacer transparentes los pequeños detalles que a menudo se pasan por alto en la prisa por el progreso y la perfección. Es gracias al trabajo con los jóvenes en sus colaboraciones que esta obra se mantiene vibrante y viva.
“El arte nos da amor porque necesitamos amor, el arte nos da compromiso porque lo anhelamos, el arte nos da alegría porque queremos seguir encontrando alegría, el arte nos acerca a esa comunidad/familia que deseamos, queremos que el arte viva en nosotros y se manifieste a través de nosotros para poder forjar el futuro con el que soñamos.”
The O+ Exchange Gallery is an exhibition and performance space located within the organization’s home base. The gallery prioritizes performances and exhibitions by O+ alumni and other artists working throughout the Hudson Valley as a way to provide them with opportunities to share their work with the public as a pathway to healthcare access through O+’s distinct exchange-based model of care.
