The Old Dutch Church is a Kingston landmark — the “Cathedral of Kingston” is one of the oldest continuously existing congregations in the country. It sits at the center of Uptown, a gathering place for congregants and the community, built on principles of radical acceptance, inclusivity, and love. On any given day, you might wander into its centuries-old structure to worship, see a play, or take in a psychedelic organ music performance.
For O+, the Old Dutch Church has been a second base of operations, a site for collaboration, and a sacred space where the mission of O+ comes to life.
For the last decade, The Old Dutch Church has been a second home for the O+ Festival. The sanctuary has hosted hundreds of Hudson Valley-based musicians and iconic national acts, has been the stage for innovative dance and art performances, and served as the best and most fitting venue for a legendary horror film screening.
The beating heart of the festival is behind the scenes in ODC’s Bethany Hall, where every year a team of dedicated volunteers and health providers builds and operates the Artists’ Clinic, where artists, musicians, and volunteers receive health and wellness services in exchange for their contributions to the festival. And in the Green Room, where a small but mighty army of volunteers led by the indefatigable Diane Reeder cooks warm, wholesome meals that keep us going all weekend long.
No matter how ambitious the set-up or raucous the programming, these are the people who dig in and help us make our wild plans a reality. We’ll never forget what Pastor Rob once said when we cautiously asked about using the space for an art installation: “My God is a God of yes.”
While O+ is a non-religious organization, we have been welcomed—in all of our identities and beliefs—to be a part of their family and their parish of yes for this magical weekend each year and beyond. The word “welcome” here is embodied, not just as a gesture, but a state of being and in the true spirit of extending a sense of belonging to your neighbor.
The team at ODC have been amazing partners and co-conspirators, and we truly would not be able to pull off the festival without their generosity, flexibility, and partnership. (And sometimes, their forgiveness, too).
For that and so much more, we are eternally grateful.
XO+,
The O+ Team
