Rixey comes from a background of non-traditional community medicine. As an EMT, she worked with Occupy Wall Street and Occupy Sandy to provide resources to those with interrupted access to normal avenues of care. She supported protests as well as helped build the People’s Relief Medical Clinic in Coney Island. She later continued this work through studying the intersection of politics and providing healthcare in her undergraduate thesis, and presented some of her work on healthcare in the Ferguson, MO uprisings at the Anarchism and the Body Conference at Purdue University in 2015. In 2022, she became a registered nurse, and currently works at a local hospital. She aims to continue examining the relationship of caring for community through the individual (and vice versa), and she aspires to return to grassroots humanitarian work.
