Olivier Manchon’s Orchestre de Chambre Miniature

For all the cross-pollination of contemporary genres going on, Orchestre de Chambre Miniature, Vol. 1 is delightfully seamless. Within just 40 minutes, it gives the listener an almost perfect view of what third-stream music ought to be: classical modes, jazzy surprises, a vibrant ensemble, that elusive personal touch, and a composer who can pull it all off without blinking. It may not be acknowledged right away as such, but Olivier Manchon has created a masterpiece. One is left longing for the inevitable sequel. – PopMatters Review

Tall Juan

In San Antonio de Padua, Buenos Aires, Argentina, a six-year-old boy picks up an electric guitar for the first time. He feels the sharp steel strings and smells the wood while playing his first chords. This moment sparks a lifelong passion for music.

Raised in an inner-city environment, his childhood was half on the streets and half playing music with friends. At an early age he started experimenting with drugs and also playing in local bands. Soon, drugs became a problem and he started feeling a lack of motivation and self esteem. He eventually leaves his hometown for New York City at the suggestion of his sister, in an intent to save him from a deep depression. In Rockaway Beach, Queens, Juan Zaballa becomes Tall Juan and begins his music career with the support of his New York friends, releasing albums that reflect his personal growth and experiences. His first album, ‘Olden Goldies’, reflect his English language learning journey and pays homage to his early punk music influences, showcasing his simplistic yet powerful songwriting while ‘Atlantico’ reconnects him with South American rhythms, displaying his musical growth.

!!! (Chk Chk Chk)

Combining punk abandon and tightly-coiled dance music has always been bonded into the band’s DNA. It’s this core plus their growth and mastery of songwriting that has seen them outlive the mid-2000s ‘indie/dance punk’ tag and has allowed them to consistently grow lyrically and sonically from album to album. As If is their most transcendent collection of songs yet.

“Each album we’ve made has gotten closer and closer to our live set and this, we’re proud to say, is the closest we’ve come yet. We were heavily influenced by current dance music — Nina Kraviz, Moodymann, Paranoid London, Rrose and Delroy Edwards were frequently referenced — and philosophically by the early ’90s house records we love on labels like Trax and Dancemania and by artists like Romanthony and Green Velvet. Those records sound great because they’re fairly raw attempts to use the technology of the time to ape the New York and Philly disco records that those producers loved. We figured, if those old house records sound like they do because the artists manipulated disco samples with MPCs, why couldn’t we just sample ourselves and manipulate the tracks with Ableton Live? The more raw it came out the better it felt, not only because that’s what excited us about those old records, but because it felt more punk, which always feels good.”

Brandy

The withering, unhealthy family tree of the bonehead, knuckle-dragged sound of Mayyors, A Frames, and Lake of Dracula grows another branch with New York City’s Brandy. Consisting of components of miscreant avant-trash guitar acts Running and Pampers, this new project somehow straddles the line between futuristic and primitive. Rhythmic and repetitive with flashes of late-70s San Francisco post-punk psychedelia, dragging barely recognizable pop hooks through the debris of Mark E. Smith’s scotch glass shatter, the songs march from front to end with a militant step and slurred, anthemic approach. Brandy makes me think it might actually be feasible to continue living and still, somehow, exist in New York.

The Wilful Boys

“They sound… Australian.”
– DJ Drew Redmond

“Rough As Guts, lives up to its name, with one mud-crusted boot in ’70s hard rock and another in punk-splattered ’90s noise-rock.”
– Lars Gotrich, NPR

“For the few mining the post-pig fuck sound of mid-’90s Amphetamine Reptile Records (and there are some), few make the brutal redux swing like this newbie Brooklyn bunch.”
– Eric Davidson, CMJ

“..the noisier and angrier songs such as the title track and “Take It Easy” are delivered with a full pint of piss to the head , a kind of love that is a welcome surprise around here.”
– RO, Maximum Rock ‘n Roll

“The perfect modern companion to the Cosmic Psychos and Easy Action records that helped countless young men grow chest hair in the ’90s.”
– Yellow Green Red

Sound of Ceres

There is no one true self. With every choice you make, your story changes. Between the potential and the actual, there exist an infinite number of variations on who you have been.

The mysterious tale of The Twin, the second full-length from Sound of Ceres, exists in myriad permutations, too: a new album, a mesmerizing live show, videos, an Alastair Reynolds short story… and others in-between. Sound of Ceres’ creative cohort of authors, composers, and illusionists traveled from a snowy Alpine retreat to the outer limits of deep space to bring you The Twin.

While their 2016 debut Nostalgia for Infinity responded to the hugeness of time and space, now Sound of Ceres explore the strangeness of being just one human outcome amidst an infinitude of possibilities.

Camp Saint Helene

Camp Saint Helene is a four piece from Catskill, NY. Liza Ibarra + Dylan Nowik moved out of Brooklyn two years ago to live in the Catskill Mountains on a former Christian summer camp, which has informed much of their artistic process. The music is witchy and shimmery with a hint of doom, and a hint of hope. There, they met Wesley Harper and Alex P. Wernquist, and formed Camp Saint Helene. Wesley and Alex began to help shape their visions into reality.

Chris Andersen, musician, instrument builder and designer, started traveling to Bali, in 2001, because of his interest in traditional gamelan music. While visiting he fell in love with the small village of Manuk. It was there that he met Ketut Suda and Ngenah Resna, local rice farmers and musicians. They would later become his partners in building Bali Steel Pan.
