The San Francisco-based Tides Foundation, on the recommendation of a donor-advised fund, has awarded O+ Festival a $245,000 matching grant for general support over three years. This means every dollar you donate to the Kingston, N.Y.-based nonprofit between today and March 2019 is worth double! The Tides Foundation “accelerates the pace of social change, working with innovative partners to solve society’s toughest problems.” The O+ Festival national team is honored that its efforts to build long-term relationships between creatives and caregivers to strengthen local communities have been recognized by such an esteemed grantor.
Through the assistance of the 3-year Tides matching grant, O+ will be able to support part-time and full-time work for year-round staff, who have donated countless hours to the nonprofit. The board of directors and national team have made an important decision to compensate all — from Executive Director to Volunteer Coordinator — on an equal level, which will allow O+ to fuel the local economy in a valuable and uniquely progressive way. This grant enables O+ to build a strong foundation and become a fully sustainable organization that is capable of forging long-term connections with neighbors, local businesses and government to co-create a healthy and vibrant community.
If you’d like to help O+ continue this important work and progress to the next level, you know what to do: send a note, let the team know how you’d like to get involved, and please consider helping O+ meet its goal of $100,000 for the next year to receive the matching funds.
O+ Festival is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. Donations are tax deductible.
O+ Festival and its longtime supporter Keegan Ales are CO+LLABORATING again! Artists and graphic designers are invited to submitcan designs for O+LD Capital, a special O+ Festival edition of the brewery’s Old Capital beer (an American Blonde Ale).
Submissions for the O+LD Capital can design are open March 1-31. A panel will select three finalist designs, which will be displayed online (Facebook and Instagram) and at the brewery, 20 Saint James St. in Kingston, N.Y. The public will then be invited to vote for a favorite from the finalists. The winning design will be revealed at an O+ fundraising party at Keegan Ales on Sunday, April 17.
The O+LD Capital can will display the winning artist’s or graphic designer’s name, web site and social media handles. The winner will also be the featured artist in an exhibition at Keegan Ales in October.
The winner and two other finalists will receive two wellness visits each at an O+ Festival clinic in Chicago, Kingston, N.Y., or Petaluma, Calif. — whichever is geographically closer to the artist’s residence.
“Keegan Ales has been an enthusiastic supporter of O+ from Day 1,” says executive director Joe Concra. “O+ was actually launched over a few beers at the brewery by members of the creative and wellness communities.”
“O+ and Keegan Ales have been supportive of each other, and that has grown into the festival taking over our entire facility for the weekend, turning our brewery into one of the premier O+ venues, and making it a drive-through mural museum as pieces are added every year,” says Keegan Ales founder Tommy Keegan. “It has been called, ‘A tattoo for your wall’ — a description that we like.”
Keegan Ales each year provides a special O+ Festival beer to be poured at venues throughout the October festival weekend in Kingston, N.Y. But this is the first time the brewery will feature a specially designed can selected via competition.
“Bringing all these creative minds together for such a great cause reinforces the belief that with a little hard work and a lot of conviction, we CAN all work together to do the right thing for ourselves, each other and our community — and have fun doing it,” Keegan says.
Use this template as your guide. Design must include the O+ logo as is. The Keegan Ales logo should also be incorporated in some way, but can be hand-drawn with some creative license worked into the art. Submit your design here now through March 31. Share your work-in-progress and final design by tagging #designoldcapital on Instagram and Twitter. Good luck!

All-access wristbands are available now for the sixth O+ Festival of art, music and wellness, which takes place Oct. 9-11 in the small Hudson River city of Kingston. The bands Screaming Females, Prince Rama, Quilt and Widowspeak are among more than 60 musical acts — which also include singer-songwriter Nicole Atkins, reunited ’80s power pop band The Bongos (fronted by Richard Barone), and Corey Glover, the lead singer of the Grammy Award-winning rock-funk band Living Colour — who will take the stage at intimate and unique venues in the city’s uptown and midtown neighborhoods.
The bands and more than 25 artists (six murals plus installations, performances and projections) — many of whom are uninsured or underinsured — will have the opportunity to receive complimentary health and wellness care from community-minded providers as a thank you for the donation of their talents to the O+ Festival audience.
The weekend-long celebration also includes a kickoff parade featuring the Hungry March Band, late-night literary SALO+N and CO+LLAGE Cafe, unlimited EXPLO+RE classes in yoga, dance, meditation and sound healing, a Wellness EXPO+ and Conference (featuring topics of particular interest to Hudson Valley residents and/or the creative community) andbike rides for all skill levels.
The estimated $78,000 cost of this year’s festival includes lifts and paint, sound and projection equipment, and ancillary medical and dental equipment. We ask our loyal and new fans to give as generously as possible when making a donation for an all-access wristband. A $50 donation entitles the wristband holder to a DO+NOR card, good for discounts and freebies on goods and services for a year at festival-supporting businesses aka Blood Relatives.
The art curatorial team welcomes back international street artist Gaia, who created the “Artemis Emerging From the Quarry” mural in 2013. He is also serving as the festival’s curator of murals of which there are six this year. Gaia will be joined by more than 25 other artists (working in murals, installation, performance and projection), including muralist jetsonorama of The Painted Desert Project, The New Yorker cartoonist Carolita Johnson, and feminist performance artist Linda Mary Montano, who is also a festival alumna.
The music curatorial team welcomes back some O+ Festival favorites, including singer/songwriter Nicole Atkins, indie-pop band And The Kids and “acoustic troubadour” Christopher Paul Stelling, and confirms that experimental/art rock band Roz and the Rice Cakes and punk rock duo Shellshagare part of this year’s lineup.
