Hiding Behind Sound

Hiding Behind Sound is the psychologically accurate songwriting and recording alias of the drummer Sammi Niss, a long-time fixture on the Hudson valley music scene and a founding member of the bands Battle Ave., American Film History, and Frankie & His Fingers. Sammi has toured and recorded with Laura Stevenson, Matt Pond PA, Pelican Movement, and many others. Hiding Behind Sound’s debut full length, ‘Words Escape,’ was written and recorded before, during, and after her treatment for stage IV non-Hodgkins lymphoma.

Co-produced with Kevin McMahon (Titus Andronicus, Real Estate, Widowspeak), ‘Words Escape’ was performed almost entirely by Sammi. The hurt cool of the songwriting and the unvarnished vocals suggest the influence of Jeff Tweedy and the The Velvet Underground; the lavish guitar arrangements and tidal dynamics belong more to the tradition of Radiohead and post-rock. It is music reverberant and turbulent, knowing and naive. The depth and assurance of the arrangements contrast with the innocence of the singing, its sense of “first voice.” She just calls it “space twang.”

Ian Flanigan

Ian Flanigan “inspires a nostalgic sentiment akin to wistful escapism… emotional without being weepy, vulnerable without being pitiful, and conceptual while still remaining relatable” (Gallagher, SUNY editorial). Flanigan’s sound—an eclectic blend of progressive folk and percussive fingerstyle—is reminiscent of the road less traveled, paved with poignant lyrical truths of his past. Local to upstate New York, Flanigan’s songwriting features his rich, husky voice and evocative lyrics highlighting the rural landscape of his compositions. Each song serenades the unity of life and an affinity for atonement—a sound that’s provocative, and familiar. This year he celebrates his place as a Kerrville Grassy Hill New Folk Festival finalist. Flanigan has had the pleasure of sharing stages with, Sean Rowe, The Pedrito Martinez Group, Session Americana, Chris Knight, and Dwight Yoakam.

The Golden Grass

The Golden Grass are THEE definitive heavy boogie rock group of today! They’re a monstrous rock n roll power trio with three lead singers and a dazzling classic touch. The group effortlessly draws their influence from the greatest musical ideas from when Rock Ruled The World; it’s as if they truly ARE from that Golden classic era. But their gift to us in The Now, and it is an epic, soulful, and hard-hitting maelstrom of feel-good, anthemic and tough swinging sounds. Their music will transport you earnestly, truthfully, and with a style and flare wholly their own. It’s all in there too; the throbbing shuffle of the Blues, the deep haze of wild Psychedelia, the American flavored Southern Rock, the mind-warping fantasy of early Progressive/Jazz Rock, the pulsating British Freakbeat/Mod sound, heavy doses of Proto-metal power, and the funky/soulful touch of Northern Soul to seal the deal.
Since their formation in 2013, they have released 3 full length LPs and 5 split-releases/EPs across a slew of European based recording labels such as Listenable Records, Svart Records, Heavy Psych Sounds & Who Can You Trust? Records. They have toured Europe 4 times, and have done significant playing/touring in the US Northeast/Mid-West. They have had the honour of supporting legendary 60’s/70’s acts such as Deep Purple, Captain Beyond & Corky Laing of Mountain, as well as a slew of contemporary international touring acts across the underground hard rock, doom, heavy metal, and rock n roll scenes!

SHADOW WITCH

“They are the band your big brother listened to, the band your dad loved, the one your sister lost her virginity to, the one your mother screamed for to be turned down, the one you always wanted to be in.”
Frazer Jones from www.stonerking1.blogspot.com

“This band have a lot going for them. The vocals from Earl are impressive throughout and the instrumental work is just so damn good!
I’ve heard these guys being compared to Graveyard, Mastodon, Clutch and Sabbath, so it tells you how expansive their sound actually is. Shadow Witch are worth giving a damn about.”
“Shadow Witch have huge potential here and I think we could be hearing a lot more of these guys in the years to come.”
“Shadow Witch play to their strengths as they deliver an album that is all killer and no filler. This album is a serious statement of intent and it will end up as one of my favorite albums of the year “
Steve Howe from www.outlawsofthesun.blogspot.com

“Shadow Witch have been listening to old school hard rock, doom metal, stoner rock and grunge a lot in their days and now translate all those influences into their own sound. That sound contains loads of fuzz, fingerlicking riffs and damn great vocals. ”
Title track ‘Sun Killer’ does the trick, blending vintage doom metal with elements from grunge, as if Alice In Chains & Soundgarden invaded Candlemass’ recording studio.”
