Bikram Yoga is a specific sequence of yoga postures and breathing exercises that is practiced in a room heated to 105 degrees Fahrenheit. The heat and humidity help to loosen up the body and warm up the muscles and joints, allowing you to stretch without fear of injury. Additionally, the heat increases blood flow (moving oxygen and nutrients deeper into injured tissues), and aids in detoxification. This beginner-friendly class is also a challenge to more experienced yoga practitioners.
Stephanie Nystrom took her first Bikram class on a sweltering July day in Washington D.C. in 2003, and fell instantly in love. She deepened her Bikram practice while attending graduate school at the University of New Mexico, before coming to the sudden realization that getting her PhD was not really what she wanted to do with her life. She attended the intensive Bikram Yoga Teacher Training in 2005, and taught in the San Francisco Bay area before moving to the Hudson Valley and opening her own studio in 2011.
